Midwest cities pledge loyalty to tap water
ST. LOUIS — This city, whose tap water ranked No. 1 in a national taste test last year, is among other Midwest cities that recently have joined the pro-tap water campaign launched by advocacy group Corporate Accountability International (CAI), according to an April 10 Associated Press report in The Joplin Globe.
City officials here have plans to stop buying bottled water for government offices and soon will ask city employees to drink from the municipal supply.
In addition, a handful of restaurateurs vowed on April 9 to serve only tap water in their restaurants, the article said.
More than a dozen restaurateurs in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, on April 9 also signed pledges to reduce the use of bottled, non-carbonated water and promote city tap water in an effort to cut down on plastic and glass waste, according to an April 10 Star Tribune article.
The city of Minneapolis now includes $200,000 in its budget to promote city water. Jeremy Hanson, spokesman for Mayor R.T. Rybak, said in the article that until bottled water sales erupted, public officials never imagined they would have to promote tap water with their own PR campaigns.
