Halting Tobacco Industry Interference

Following the global tobacco treaty's unanimous adoption and wide-spread ratification, we worked with our allies to secure precedent-setting guidelines for the treaty.

These rigorous guidelines prevent the industry from interfering in health policy. They have helped countries across the globe overcome industry intimidation, coercion, and opposition to new tobacco control laws. For example, following the guidelines, Colombia’s Congress removed industry representatives from the negotiating table during the development of the national tobacco control bill. In Kenya, the Tobacco Control Act codifies the guidelines and prohibits interference, collaboration or consultation with Big Tobacco in the formulation and implementation of all tobacco control policies.

The guidelines set a powerful precedent for protecting policy-making from corporate influence and interference across industries.
