In the Middle East, though tobacco use has been prevalent for hundreds of years, Big Tobacco’s brand power has propelled addiction rates among youth and women to skyrocket. The industry has also gained influence with policymakers in the region -- from using inside connections with public officials in Lebanon to corporate social responsibility (CSR) schemes in Jordan. That’s why, in the lead-up to World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, public health advocates in the region are using the weight of the most critical provision of the global tobacco treaty to keep Big Tobacco out of policymaking.
