Tobacco use is increasing in Zambia, particularly among children, and it continues to wreak havoc on the country’s health and economy. But Zambia, like the U.S., is among the small minority of countries that have not ratified the global tobacco treaty. Tobacco industry interference is one of the key reasons. Giant transnationals like British American Tobacco (BAT) and Philip Morris/Altria have claimed to represent the interests of Zambian farmers, and tobacco control policies have stalled.
