To the Editor:
Recently, Gov. M. Jodi Rell ordered the cancellation of over $21 million in state contracts for goods and services. She should also consider eliminating the $500,000 the state spends each year on bottled water for its employees and public visitors to state buildings.
Most state buildings in the Hartford area are connected to the Metropolitan District Commission water system. There should be no reason to purchase bottled water.
Tap water is safe and more regulated than bottled water. Bottled water is also more costly (up to 1,000 times more expensive than tap water) even though many products are derived from tap water.
Encouraged by the mayor of West Hartford to "think outside the bottle," that town recently took a pledge to cut spending on bottled water. Gov. Rell should follow that lead by cutting spending for bottled water and calling for increased federal investment in our public water infrastructure.
