Coke Shareholders' Meeting 2008 On April 16, Coke's top executives gathered in Wilmington, Delaware for the corporation's annual shareholders' meeting. Executives used the event to trumpet Coke's water stewardship credentials. Corporate Accountability International was also there to call out Coke's big greenwash. This year Coke blocked a shareholders' resolution that would have required it to publicly disclose water quality reports -- even as the corporation claimed that its water is somehow better than the tap. So we asked, "Is Coke's Dasani full of hot air?" and handed out a sea of bright, blue balloons to shareholders, to encourage them to ask the same. To remind the corporation why we were at the meeting, we marched with our allies under a banner that read, "There is enough water for human need, but not for human greed." This quote by Mahatma Gandhi sums up our mission. If we don't stop abusive corporations, like Coke, from draining water in drought prone areas and building fortunes off of misleading marketing, people and our environment will needlessly suffer. Corporate Accountability International's Think Outside the Bottle Campaign Director, Gigi Kellett spoke at the meeting calling out Coke's attempts to greenwash their image. Read Gigi Kellett's statement. Sister Claire Regan with the Sisters of Charity in New York, also spoke at the meeting demanding Coke cease bottling in parts of India where water is scarce. Read Sister Claire Regan's statement. Student activist Stefanie Lynch of Emerson College, was at the meeting to explain how she got her student government to stop buying bottled water.
