Albuquerque, N.M. - Mayor Martin Chavez has signed an executive order banning the city from buying bottled water for its employees.
Chavez said the city's tap water is safe and there's no need to purchase a bottled product.
City Councilor Isaac Benton had raised the idea of the ban. He cites nationwide studies in saiding that 95 percent of people don't recycle the bottles.
Chavez said firefighters still will be provided bottles of water to hand out during emergencies.
Last year, Santa Fe city councilors and staffers stopped serving bottled water during meetings in favor of pitchers of tap water.
