Bottled Dollars The New York Times - Wednesday, February 22, 2006 To the Editor: In "Which Water Is Tastiest?" (Feb. 15), Julia Moskin asks, Does bottled water taste better than tap? The more important question is, Should corporations be bottling and selling our drinking water? Bottled water costs thousands of times more than tap, even though the most popular brands, Dasani and Aquafina, are just tap water anyway. But huge profit margins are why corporations like Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Pepsi are turning water into a profit-driven commodity like oil. At the World Water Forum next month, Coke and other corporations will push for policies that allow even greater profits, including privatizing municipal water systems. Water is precious and sustains all life on earth. It should be a fundamental human right, not a money machine for corporations that are unaccountable to the public. PATTI LYNN
