Coke vs. Indian villages
San Francisco Chronicle - Wednesday, March 9, 2005

Editor--In the article, "Parched village sues to shut tap at Coke" (March 6), your correspondent Mark Williams rightly observes, "As legal battles go, few have appeared to be so unequal." Yet his report only scratches the surface of the Coca-Cola Co.'s irresponsible and dangerous practices in India.

Coke drains water from some of the poorest communities in the world to make soft drinks and bottled water. The impact on people in these communities is devastating. In Mehdiganj, farmers have been left without enough water to irrigate crops.

Corporate Accountability International recently participated in a 150-mile march that culminated in a peaceful protest of 1,500 people at Coke's plant in Mehdiganj. Coke tried to undermine the march in a number of ways.

The movement challenging Coke's practices is growing. Coke must never reopen its plant in Plachimada (ordered closed after that village denied water to the operation), and it must shut down the Mehdiganj plant and pay back affected communities for damages done.
