Campaign Update ![]() April 2007 - Nigeria is not the Only Place Where Chevron has Flaring ProblemsChevron's Richmond (CA) refinery was the only Bay Area refinery to increase flaring of excessive gasses since a 2005 pollution rule requiring refiners to reduce flaring. Chevron's Richmond plant has increased flaring activity by 80% since the new rule was issued. Shell has reduced its flaring by 74% and Conoco Philips by 15%. Flaring is used to eliminate a dangerous build up of gases that could otherwise contribute to an explosion. The gas builds up when the refinery is not running as intended. January 2007 - Big Oil Learns from Big TobaccoIn recent years, ExxonMobil provided close to $16 million in funding to 40 groups that question the urgency of global warming. This web of organizations disseminates the views of a dwindling group of climate change contrarians. Through this sophisticated effort, ExxonMobil has manufactured uncertainty about even the most indisputable scientific evidence on global warming. Disturbingly, ExxonMobil has drawn on the same tactics, and even some of the same organizations and people as Big Tobacco. See more on the tobacco industry The report also reveals how ExxonMobil's extraordinary influence over key officials in the White House and Congress has fueled the disinformation campaign and helped to forestall federal action to reduce U.S. global warming emissions. It uses its outrageous profits and tremendous power to block progress on global warming and aggressively pursue policies that keep the U.S. addicted to oil. That's why Corporate Accountability International has joined forces with the ExxposeExxon campaign - a collaborative effort of many of the nation's largest environmental and public interest advocacy organizations, including Greenpeace, Sierra Club, MoveOn.org, and U.S. PIRG. ExxposeExxon aims to inform and educate people about ExxonMobil's efforts to prevent action on global warming, drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and encourage our dependence on oil. We're excited to join this campaign to help expose the Exxon agenda just after ExxonMobil executives and board members met for the corporation's annual shareholders' meeting in Dallas, Texas on May 31st. Over 100 activists gathered outside the annual meeting to pressure ExxonMobil to stop using its profits and power to fuel our country's oil addiction.
