ACTIVISTS CALL ON CHEVRONTEXACO TO STOP IRRESPONSIBLE AND DANGEROUS PRACTICE OF GAS FLARING IN NIGERIA For Immediate Release: Contacts:
Through raging fires 24 hours a day, ChevronTexaco burns gas spewing from open oil wells in communities throughout Nigeria, with devastating impacts on people's health and the environment. While gas flaring is hardly ever done in the US and Europe, there are more gas flares in Nigeria than in any other country in the world. "With oil prices at an all-time high, ChevronTexaco is raking in record profits. However, its executives and shareholders are benefiting at the expense of people's health and the environment, in Nigeria and around the world," says Corporate Accountability International Campaigns Director Patricia Lynn. "Our members are adding their voices to the growing demand for ChevronTexaco to end its irresponsible and dangerous practice of gas flaring in Nigeria." Gas flares have been described as a one-story furnace, shooting flames and toxins out of the ground. In Nigeria, where ChevronTexaco has continued this practice illegally over the past 20 years, villagers are exposed to dangerous levels of carcinogens and acid rain so strong it corrodes their roofs. This hazardous practice has been stopped in most parts of the world and is described by the World Bank as "the most striking example of environmental neglect" in Nigeria. # # # Corporate Accountability International, formerly Infact, is a membership organization that protects people by waging and winning campaigns challenging irresponsible and dangerous corporate actions around the world. For over 25 years, we've forced corporationslike Nestlé, General Electric and Philip Morris/Altria--to stop abusive actions. For more information visit www.stopcorporateabuse.org.
