CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY INTERNATIONAL JOINS IN GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION FOR BHOPAL Pressure on Dow Chemical Builds on 20th Anniversary of Bhopal Disaster FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACTS: Boston--Twenty years ago today, Union Carbide released twenty-seven tons of lethal gases from its pesticide factory in Bhopal, India. The poisonous leak spread over the city, instantly killing 8,000 people and contributing to the death of more than 20,000 people in the years since. Corporate Accountability International, formerly Infact, joins with the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal demanding that Dow Chemical, the current owner of Union Carbide, be held accountable for its actions. "Twenty years after the Bhopal tragedy, Dow Chemical continues to deny responsibility and is still producing some of the world's most deadly chemicals. Today, we are supporting the call for Dow to be held accountable for the devastation that the Bhopal disaster inflicted," says Corporate Accountability International Campaigns Director Patti Lynn. Dow Chemical, headquartered in Midland, MI, is the largest chemical corporation in the US and the second largest in the world. It is a prime example of a corporation that does not abide by Corporate Accountability International's Standards of Political Conduct for Corporations. "Dow gets away with its abuses because of its tremendous economic and political clout. As more and more people come together around the world, Dow will be forced to change its ways," says Lynn. Corporate Accountability International is encouraging people across the country to support the people of Bhopal's struggle for justice and sign onto the petition calling on Dow to resolve the outstanding legal and moral obligations it has there. www.petitiononline.com/bhopal. # # #
