Challenging Water, Oil and Agribusiness Corporations Today our mission is more urgent than ever. Corporate Accountability International is challenging Big Oil giants like ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco for causing permanent damage to the air we breathe and the water we drink. We're taking on global food and agribusiness corporations like Cargill, Monsanto and Dow for increasing their profits, as people around the world face hunger and malnutrition. And we're confronting corporations like Coca-Cola and Suez for their aggressive attempts to turn water from a basic human right into an unaffordable luxury contributing to a crisis that could leave two-thirds of the world's population without enough access to water. The Tobacco Industry Campaign: 1993-today In 1993, we launched the Tobacco Industry Campaign, targeting Philip Morris (now Altria) and RJR Nabisco (now Reynolds American Tobacco) as the leaders in spreading a preventable global epidemic. Our grassroots campaign pressure, including a boycott of Philip Morris-owned Kraft, exposed the truth behind their corporate images and reduced the industry's political and economic influence.
Our work culminated in the adoption of the world's first corporate accountability treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, a major victory for people's health over industry profits. We continue to campaign for the implementation and enforcement of the tobacco treaty. Read more.
The Hall of Shame Campaign: Columbia/HCA, 1997-2000 We challenged health care giant Columbia/HCA (now HCA) for taking over nonprofit and community-owned hospitals, turning away patients without insurance, and using political clout to get away with these abuses. In 2000, we declared victory after the self-proclaimed "Wal-Mart of health care" made significant changes in its policies and practices. Read more.
Nuclear Weaponmakers Campaign 1984-1993 Our Nuclear Weaponmakers Campaign and General Electric Boycott helped push industry leader General Electric out of the nuclear weapons business. Read more.
Infant Formula Campaign, 1977-1986 Our Infant Formula Campaign and Nestlé Boycott brought about significant reforms in the life-threatening marketing of infant formula in economically poor countries. Read more.
