Business First of Buffalo - Bottled water capped at NY agencies

An executive order signed Tuesday by Gov. David Paterson will put a halt to the purchase and use of bottled water at state facilities.

Officials said New York becomes the second state to implement such a measure.

State agencies must now detail plans to comply with the order.

“Taxpayers have spent billions of dollars to ensure that we have clean drinking water supplies,” Paterson said. “If we are going to make such significant investments, we should reap the benefits and use that water.”

The action was strongly favored by environmentalists who say bottled water is no safer than tap water. Supporters also said that over 450 million gallons of oil are used to transport water from bottling plants to stores.
