Spotlight on Trans-Pacific Partnerships (TPP)

Corporate Accountability International
Far-reaching policy is being hammered out behind closed doors.

From September 6-15, 2012, the U.S. is in closed-door trade talks. These negotiations will have deep impacts the lives of people across the Pacific Rim…and they’re teaming with lobbyists representing Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, Big Ag and more.

These abusive industries are busy making deals at the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. Meanwhile, we, the people, got the door slammed in our faces. Even members of Congress have been shut out.

It seems like common sense that if the U.S. is going to enter into an agreement that puts important public protections at risk, the public ought to have a say about it. But we don’t even know what’s exactly in the trade agreement, because the text hasn’t been made public.

What we do know is pretty frightening. The agreement opens the door to assaults on public health policies -- from decreasing people’s access to medicine, to doing away with laws that protect our food. And it will give global corporations more power to attack health and environmental safeguards, making it even easier for Big Tobacco to file lawsuits against lifesaving public policy measures around the world.

But it’s not too late -- you can make a difference. There’s a worldwide effort to demand transparency in the TPP negotiations. Already, media coverage and members of Congress are helping to increase pressure on the White House to end the secrecy.

Now we need your voice. Let the president know you won’t stand for closed-door tactics when our health -- and our very democracy -- is at stake.
